Minimially Invasive Treatment of Infrabony Periodontal Defects Using Dual-Wavelength Laser Therapy

Highlights:

  • Minimally Invasive: The treatment is described as flapless, avoiding the need for traditional surgical techniques that are more invasive and time-consuming. This approach is intended to reduce patient morbidity and expense.
  • Significant Pocket Depth Reduction: The study reported a significant reduction in pocket depths (PD) in the treated sites. The mean baseline PD was 8.8mm, which was reduced to 2.4mm after 6 months, with a mean PD reduction of 6.4mm.
  • Bone Regeneration: There was a significant gain in relative linear bone height (apical extent of bone), with a mean percentage bone fill of 39.7%. 53% of the treated sites showed at least 40% infill of bone.
  • Specific Laser Protocol: The procedure involved initial ultrasonic debridement followed by the application of the Er,Cr:YSGG laser using a radial firing tip to remove granulation tissue and biofilm and to modify the root surface. The diode laser was then applied externally to the gingival margin, for a biostimulatory effect.
  • Positive Patient Experience: Patients reported a more comfortable experience compared to conventional surgery, with minimal need for analgesics postoperatively and no postoperative infections requiring antibiotics.
  • Comparison to Traditional Surgery: The study results are comparable to traditional surgical regenerative therapies, suggesting that this minimally invasive laser technique is an effective treatment option for infrabony defects.
  • Bactericidal Effect: The lasers used in this study have a bactericidal effect, which is important in treating periodontal disease. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser is effective against P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans, while diode lasers are effective against pigmented periodontal pathogens.
  • Emphasis on Wound Stability: The study highlights that minimally invasive surgical techniques can result in equivalent regenerative outcomes even without grafts.

Do I need to be a laser user to attend this course?

It is intended for dental clinicians who want high quality laser education, to understand more about how and why it works, to be able to apply sound laser application, and to see the benefits and proof thereof, especially in all procedures within Perio and soft-tissue surgery. Whether you have been using lasers for years, just starting out, or even considering it for the future, this is a highly recommended course for either, with the option of even more advanced training on day two. I have never used a dental laser. Will I get to try it?

This is one of the great benefits of attending such a cutting-edge course. You can certainly get to try up to three different lasers at the course. Day 2 will be more focused on practical skills training. But even on day 1 you can have the opportunity to try your hand at laser on some tissue at SciVision's fully equipped training centre. If you'd like, you could even request an in-practice demo after the course to take it further and try it on a patient. SciVision can provide you with various training material post-course, including an online diode course to get you ready to use it to the best of your ability.
